Though he died in Sambisa Forest, Nigeria on 19 May 2021 at the age of 46–56 according to Wikipedia, Boko Haram, a terrorist group he once led is still operational and recruiting fighters in the region.

Abubakar Shekau was known for his devastating attacks and abductions in the Northeast region amid a strong security presence in the area comprising of regional security operatives.

His death came as a result of an internal dispute between the Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP), a fractional group of Boko Haram in the Northeast of Nigeria.

Boko Haram gradually crumbled and pledged allegiance to their rival fraction which is presently known as the Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP).

More attacks and abduction was witnessed in the Northeast of Nigeria especially in Borno State and Yobe State where the group’s activities are limited to following the unyielding efforts and tenacity of the Nigerian troops in the region.

Regardless of the death of Abubakar Shekau, more regional commanders, leaders, and logistics commanders were appointed by terrorist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP) to date.

So how has the death of the brutal leader of the Boko Haram group influenced the fight against insurgency in Nigeria? Well, it may have taken a long time to end the era of Shakau Abubakar and some of his loyal fighters in the past, but there afterward his death, more of his colleagues, replacements, and interims have seen their untimely eradication by the Nigerian troops either by gunfights or airstrike.
