“Several people are feared trapped in a five-storey building collapse reported at Gesima in Nyamira County,” a statement from Kenya Red Cross read in part.

Search and rescue operations are already underway. Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a reporter on the ground revealed that the building was empty at the time of the collapse.

“The building was empty as it was condemned in 2014 and construction halted. The people who are trapped were in adjacent buildings which were destroyed during the incident,” he explained.

While no fatalities were reported at the time of publishing, it was confirmed that three people had been badly injured.

Responders who rushed to the scene were able to rescue two minors and a 40-year-old man who were rushed to hospital.

The three are currently receiving treatment after sustaining minor injuries during the tragedy. Police officers and other emergency responders are camping on the site to rescue other Kenyans who may be trapped in the rubble.

The incident happened a day after a perimeter wall collapsed in Ruaka, Kiambu County leading to the death of one person.
