Allegations have been making the rounds on social media that Wike rigged the election in the state against Peter Obi. And on Thursday, the Igbo apex socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, had met with Wike at the EXCO Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt, over the alleged role he played in Obi’s loss in the election.
According to the transcription of the meeting which was made available to newsmen, the delegation was led by the Vice President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo (Abia), Dr Kingsley Chidozie.
While speaking on behalf of the group, Dr Peter Aneke told Wike that Ndigbo all over the world are not happy with him over the allegations circulating on social media that he rigged the election against Obi.
Part of the transcription read – “Aneke wondered ‘how an Ikwerre man would in good conscience, work against the Igbo in a presidential election where the candidacy of Peter Obi was a low-hanging fruit.’ He informed Wike that the Igbo all over the world are aggrieved with him, especially as the alleged rigging operations are circulating on the internet.”
Aneke expressed surprise that Obi won the election in Lagos, Abuja and several other places in the North, only to record such low number of votes in Rivers State, and said that both the Igbo elders and youths are eager to know why he would go to such length to pull down Obi in Rivers.
In the report which was made by Sahara Reporters, Wike said that when Southern Governors met and decided that power should be shifted to the South, there was no discussion on Igbo presidency.
The report added – “Wike explained that the Southern Governors’ Forum first met at Asaba, Delta State, and agreed that power must shift to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari; and that they also met at Enugu in September 2021 to reaffirm their position for a power shift to the South.
Wike stated that throughout their meetings, ‘the issue of presidency to the South-East was never on the table. And that throughout his political adventure, he tried as much as possible to maintain the position of the Southern Governors.”
