At the final whistle, he showed Simunic a third yellow card for disobedience, which resulted in the official sending him out.

Poll admitted that he made a mistake in his second booking of Simunic. He stated that he marked his card with the correct number (3) but in the wrong column due to Simunic’s Australian accent. As a result, Poll booked Australia’s Craig Moore rather than Simunic.

In addition to the event with the yellow card, there were some other questionable officiating decisions made during that game.

Poll, along with thirteen other officials, was kicked off the field by FIFA for the remainder of the World Cup in 2006. On June 29, 2006, he cited his mistake as the cause for his retirement from playing football in international competitions.
