For diabetics it means eating those foods which could help stabilize your blood sugar level and avoiding those foods that could put your blood sugar level and other possible complications in danger.

Below are some of the foods you should avoid if you have diabetes.

1. Breakfast cereals.

Most breakfast cereals are loaded with sugar and carbs. They are really nutritious but not suitable for people battling with diabetes as they could cause a spike in blood sugar level.

2. Fruit juice.

Fruit juice is known to be a healthy drink but for people living with diabetes,it is not healthy because it may increase blood sugar as much as soda. Instead go for whole fruits. The fiber in whole fruits makes them more acceptable to the body than fruit juice, when it comes to blood sugar control. It is equally more nutritious than fruit juice because it is less processed.

3. Honey and other natural sugars.

Most people who want to avoid white sugar may want to switch to honey as a healthy alternative, this is not the case. Even though honey is less processed than white sugar, it contains as much carbs as white sugar and would also increase blood sugar level, insulin levels and other inflammatory markers like sugar. According to health line, a tablespoon of honey contains 17.3 g of carbs while white sugar contains 12.6 g of carbs.

4. Fruit flavoured yoghurt.

Fruit flavoured yoghurts are made with full fat milk or low fat milk with a lot of sugar added. They are not good for people battling with diabetes, instead go for plain yoghurt which is made with whole milk with no added sugar.

5. Sugar sweetened beverages.

Beverages sweetened with sugar are not a healthy choice of food for people battling with diabetes. It doesn’t matter whether it is tea, chocolate drink or even soda.

All foods or drinks with added sugar should be avoided by people battling with diabetes in order to put the disease under control.

6. Trans fats.

Trans fats are artificial hydrogenated oils that are used in the manufacturing of some margarines, biscuits, some breads and mayonnaise.

They have been banned by FBI since 2020 . They may cause complications for people suffering from diabetes. Trans fats may increase the chances of getting complications for people people suffering from diabetes.

7. White rice, bread and pasta.

White rice, bread and pasta are regular menu in most Nigerian families. They are however an unhealthy food choice for people battling with diàbetes. They are highly processed and do not contain enough fiber.

They may cause a spike in blood sugar level. Diabetics should rather go for brown rice, wheat bread and whole wheat pasta.

8. Dried fruits.

Fruits and vegetables are generally considered as healthy food choices because they are packed with nutrients. However dried frúits are more concentrated than fresh fruits. As a result some of them may even contain more sugar.
