However, in men, a lack of s£xual appetite over long periods of time can be a cause for concern as it may indicate underlying health problems.

Some causes of lack of s£xual appetite in men, according to healthline, are:

1. Depression

Depression can be life-changing. Therefore, a depressed person may experience a partial or complete lack of s£xual appetite.

Decreased libido can also be a side effect of some antidepressants. It is important to talk to your doctor if you are on medication. Only your doctor can tell you if you need to lower your dose or change your treatment. Be aware that stopping treatment can lead to a severe relapse or a greater degree of depression.

2. Low testosterone levels

Testosterone is a male hormone that is also present in women, but in smaller amounts.

In men, it is mainly produced in the testicles and is responsible for muscle building, bone mass, and sperm production. It therefore influences s£xual desire.

A drastic drop in this hormone can lead to a lack of s£xual appetite.

3. Chronic diseases

When your health is affected by the effects of chronic illness or pain, s£x may not be a priority. Certain ailments may lower the sperm count. This is the case, for example, with chronic kidney disease.

This disease can affect many organic processes, including dysfunction of the endocrine system, which is responsible for secreting hormones such as testosterone.

This is because the body focuses on fighting the disease. So it is important to talk to your partner about the causes of your lack of s£xual appetite. There could be problems in the relationship. Marriage counsellors or s£x therapists could be called in to discuss the problems.

4. Lack of sexual appetite due to medication

There are certain medications that can lower testosterone levels and cause a lack of s£x drive. They include opioids, antipsychotics, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, beta-blockers, anti-baldness drugs, and medicines containing oestrogen.

All of these can cause problems with erection or ejaculation. If you feel that these medications have had such effects, talk to your doctor about alternatives.

5. Ageing

As we age, testosterone levels decrease, which can lead to a lack of s£x drive. The highest level of libido in men is in their teenage years, after which it gradually declines.

Between the ages of 60 and 65, it is normal to notice a difference in libido and it is more difficult to have orgasms, ejaculate or become aroused. However, there are medications that can help you.

6. Restless legs syndrome

Restless legs syndrome is defined as the uncontrollable urge to move your legs. Men with restless legs syndrome have an increased risk of erectile dysfunction.

7. Sleep problems

Lack of sleep reduces testosterone levels in men, and this is directly related to a lack of s£xual desire.

8. Stress

When you are under high levels of stress or have anxiety, your s£x drive can decrease dramatically.

Persistent stress can affect testosterone production, resulting in a decrease in s£x drive or libido and can even cause erectile dysfunction or impotence.
