Moving beyond the conflict zone, the Biden administration aims to present Congress with a new weapons package that combines aid for Israel and Ukraine, surpassing the initial $2 billion proposed.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan emphasized the president’s intention to hold extensive discussions with Congress regarding the necessity of approving the package. As some Republicans call for cuts in aid to Kyiv, Biden is considering merging aid for Israel, Ukraine, and potentially Taiwan and the U.S. southern border in an effort to enhance the likelihood of approval. The exact amount of the request remains uncertain but is expected to exceed $2 billion.

However, the passage of any bill through Congress will depend on the presence of a speaker in the House of Representatives. Following the ousting of Kevin McCarthy, Republicans are currently struggling to elect a new speaker. Until a new speaker is chosen, no legislative work can proceed.
