Giving your child the best of educational experience is the goal of every parent. But choosing the right school environment isn’t the final step in this process. Here are some tips and techniques through which you can keep your child engaged and motivated in his pursuit for knowledge:...CONTINUE READING

1. DO NOT OVER-CRITICIZE

This is a commonly made mistake by parents, as they get too stressed about their child’s school grades and vent out this stress on the child. It DOES NOT HELP them understand the cruciality of their education. It may however, cause the child to run further away from studying. Remember, not every child can handle criticism constructively, and you can be sure they’re receiving a fair share of it at school already.

2. UNDERSTAND THE BARRIERS

Your child may be facing a genuine issue which is keeping him or her for giving his best on the educational front. Sit down with your child and discuss whatever problems they may have, such as a need for tuitions, over-critical school environment, or in some cases, even dyslexia (Dyslexia is a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence.). Ask your child how you can contribute to removing these barriers for them.

3. DO NOT COMPARE

While you may be worried that your child isn’t performing as well as his friends or classmates, do not burden your child with such expectations. Understand that not all five fingers of your own hand are equal, let alone the intellect of all children. Praise your child for their hardwork and tell them that they can get even better than that, and that you’ll help them through it.

4. REWARDS

Each time your child studies hard for a test, whatever the result may be, reward them for their hardwork. Tell them that you see immense potential in them and that you see them doing great things in life. E.g. If your child previously scored 25/50 on a math test and gets 30/50 in the next one, take him or her for an ice cream treat or any other thing that your child likes.

5. SET GOALS

Make your child see the bigger picture. Ask them what it is that they aspire to become in the future. Then associate that with the role education would play in drawing them closer to their goal.

I hope these tips help you and your child venture on a healthy and happy educational journey. As parents, one should try to make education seem like a process and not a destination. Remember, not all children are the same and believe that your child will find his purpose in life through education, or some other way.
