Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions that contain pungent oils, can contribute to bad breath because the oils are carried to your lungs and out through your mouth. Smoking is also a major cause of bad breath. In this article, we shall be looking at some careless habits that can cause mouth odour.

1. Eating certain foods.

The breakdown of food particles in and around your teeth can increase bacteria and cause a foul odor. Eating certain foods, such as onions, garlic and spices, also can cause bad breath. After you digest these foods, they enter your bloodstream, are carried to your lungs and affect your breath.

2. Not brushing of teeth.

If you don’t brush and floss daily, food particles remain in your mouth, causing bad breath. A colorless, sticky film of bacteria (plaque) forms on your teeth. If not brushed away, plaque can irritate your gums and eventually form plaque-filled pockets between your teeth and gums (periodontitis).

3. Smoking.

People who smoke normally obtain what is commonly known as smoker’s breath, which is a stale scent that is created by the cigarette smoke that is still lingering in your throat and lungs. Smoking also leaves chemical compounds in your mouth that can mix with your saliva and cause bad breath.

4. Too much intake of alcohol.

You probably associate alcohol breath with either a hangover or the short term lingering effects of beer or wine breath, but it’s far more insidious than this. Alcohol and other lifestyle choices cause bad breath by promoting the growth of bacteria in your mouth that produce some decidedly unpleasant aromas.
