According to the police prosecutor, Mr Ibo Daniel, the defendant committed the offence on February 14, 2023, when he and his accomplices attempted to rob Aiyewunmi Sunday, who was traveling with his family to Ogun State.

The defendant allegedly used stones and other weapons to damage the side glasses of a Volkswagen bus with registration number KRD 395 Y.

The charge sheet read that Effiong and his accomplices conspired to commit the felony of attempted robbery, which is punishable under Section 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

They also intentionally formed or combined and agreed to form and organize an unlawful society or cult named Eye confraternity, knowing same to be unlawful, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 2(3)(a)(b)(c)(d)(e) of the Lagos State criminal law.

Magistrate Mrs Akinyemi did not take the plea of the defendant, and the case was adjourned till March 3 for mention.

Effiong’s remand at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre is in line with the Lagos State government’s commitment to curbing crime and ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law. The government has consistently reiterated its zero-tolerance for cultism and other criminal activities.
