He was in Lafia, Nassarawa State capital about two days ago. He wanted to get the endorsement of Governor Abdullahi Sule. But the governor was so blunt to him that he told the team that he would rather support his “brother”, Tanko Al-Makura. The team, Senator Akume Contact Group, was disappointed. Yet he can win the convention.
The first thing is that if it becomes totally clear that a Muslim from southern region will become the presidential candidate, he may be voted for to become the national chairman since he is a Christian from north. This is a great advantage for him over others.
Right now, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the main potential candidate of the APC from the south. He has not declared his ambition, but he told the Northern Alliance Committee that when wouldn’t disappoint people who ask him to contest.
If it later becomes so clear that the political party will be left with no choice but to consider a Muslim for the presidential ticket, George Akume may end up to be the lucky politician to become the APC national chairman. There is actually a reference.
The second thing is that the All Progressives Congress may want to counter the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The opposition party chose its national chairman through consensus. And Mr. Iyorchia Ayu, an ex president of the Senate, emerged. Ayu is from Benue State. His emergence may one way or the other influence the All Progressives Congress in its convention.
The APC knows that it is very important to reclaim Benue State and since Ayu and Akume used to be allies, the party can decide to opt for the minister of special duties as the national chairman of the ruling APC.
