The Narrow Bee Fly famously called the Nairobi Fly is an insect known to thrive during increased rainfall along the beach in decomposing wooden materials and equally in areas of poor sanitation such as crudely dumped waste.
The county department of health issued a warning to the locals regarding a significant infestation of Nairobi flies in the vicinity.
According to Director of Public Health Fred Olouch, the Nairobi fly has a toxin called pederin that if it’s squeezed and released on the skin, irritation occurs leading to intense itching and blistering on site causing pederus dermatitis.
Following the upsurge in rainfall, Oluoch noted that cases have been reported in the two beaches with most people reporting skin blisters on the neck with intense itching.
“So far 28 cases have been tracked and managed. Case management is supportive with the use of topical steroids or moisturising agentsIf severe cases then antibiotics too could be prescribed,” he said.
The Director added that in terms of prevention measures, members of the public are requested to blow it away when in contact with the skin, do not squeeze.
“Use of ITNS at night is highly recommended.”
The county health department through their official Facebook page, also urged locals to take immediate action following the alert to mitigate the spread of diseases and discomfort caused by it.
“This is to Maintain proper sanitation practices, including regular disposal of garbage, cleaning of drains, and covering food items,” the alert read.
Additionally, the locals have been advised to use insect repellents, screens on windows, and protective clothing to prevent bites and exposure to these flies.
The locals have further been advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings or concerns to the local health authorities or call toll-free number 0800720575 for assistance.
