A report reaching us from Daily Trust revealed how a 27-year-old man, Darlington Ugboaja, who was found with crystal meth popularly known as ‘Mpkurummiri’ was beaten to death by some unidentified youths. The sad event which happened at Anara market in Isiala Mbano local government area of the state led to tension in the area as traders were seen closing their shops for fear of reprisal by the victim’s kinsmen. Though the way youths in the east are vehemently fighting against the abuse of this hard drug is commendable, however, their modus operandi is barbaric, as they are taking it too far. Imagine the pains the victim’s loved ones will be facing due to the recklessness of these youths, who claim to be making their community drug-free.

It should be noted that Nigeria is a civilized country bound by laws- no one has the right to take laws into his hands for any reason. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is a body responsible for treating drug-related cases – anyone caught with hard drugs should be taken to their office, where the right punishment will be meted on the culprit if found guilty.

Instead of beating a person in possession of crystal meth, youths should be sensitized to the dangers of drug abuse. Also, parents should instill discipline in their wards and warn them against keeping bad company.
