But Woodgate was particularly concerned by Gomez’s performance. In fact, the retired defender called the centre-back’s substitution just after the half-hour mark when the scoreline was 2-0.
“Napoli have been absolutely destroying Liverpool. It could be 4-0 in this first half. It wouldn’t surprise me if Joe Gomez gets taken off at half-time, he’s finding it tough,” he told BBC Sport.

It was a very grim night for the whole Liverpool squad. And with that, Klopp will surely be reluctant to be too critical of one single player in public.
The worry is that Gomez is struggling to recapture the form he showed before his long-term injury. He spent much of last season down the pecking order behind Joel Matip. And he failed to stake a claim for more game-time on Wednesday.
But unfortunately, Gomez is not the only Liverpool player struggling by any means. It has been a really poor start to the season. And Klopp must be wondering how exactly he is going to drag the Reds out of their current rut.
It is almost frightening to see just how far off it his side appear to be in the opening stages of this campaign.
