According to the Tribune, President Muhammadu Buhari has described the recently held governorship election in Anambra State as free and fair. Prior to this, the president had only congratulated the winner of the election and didn’t state whether or not the election was free and fair....CONTINUE READING
The minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, who relayed the President’s position after his meeting the service chiefs said the president was happy because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies made the election free and fair.
President Buhari will be joining other notable APC leaders like the minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngige, a governorship aspirant in the APC, George Moghalu, who have also described the election as free and fair.
However, will the position of Senator Andy Uba who is the governorship candidate of the APC change after President Buhari, who is the supreme leader of the party said the election was free and fair?
Recall that Senator Uba had promised to go to court to challenge the outcome of the election. He cited various irregularities in the conduct of the election and promised to retrieve his stolen mandate in court.
However, more than two weeks after INEC declared APGA governorship candidate, Chukwuma Soludo, the winner of the election, Senator Uba has yet to file a petition before the election tribunal to challenge Soludo’s victory.
He still has about 4 or 5 days grace to file a petition before the tribunal, otherwise, he will miss the 21 days period given by the law to file a petition after the winner of the election was declared by INEC.
I however think Senator Uba should rethink his position and align with leaders of the party who have described the election as free and fair. Him other opponents who lost in the election should accept the hand of fellowship extended by the winner and work together to develop the state for the benefit of every Anambrarians.
