6. Coffee

This should come as no surprise to you, as we sometimes, tend to take coffee when the plan is to stay awake all night, for whatever reasons. However, what many don’t know is that caffeine can remain in your system for hours, which means that it is best to completely avoid coffee for at least 6 hours before bedtime if you intend to have a restful sleep.

5. Sugary foods

Cereals, soda, chocolates, juice, anything that contains a large amount of sugar should not be consumed at night. Sugary foods have a high tendency to leave you wide awake or cause you to have a very restless sleep.

4. Cruciferous vegetables

Vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli are great for the body and contain essential vitamins your body needs to function properly, but they also contain a large amount of insoluble fiber, which takes forever to digest. This means that your body will be too busy trying to digest this fiber while you should be sleeping, thereby leading to an extremely restless sleep.

3. Red wine

Who doesn’t like to unwind after a long day with a tall glass of red wine and some soft music? Well, the bad news is, red wine, and alcohol in general will disrupt your natural sleep pattern, and regular consumption of it at night will eventually worsen your sleep quality. Also, you don’t want to be running in and out of the bathroom to pee every few hours when you should be enjoying peaceful slumber.

2. Water

‘Drink water and mind your business’, not ‘drink too much water and spend all your time in he bathroom.’ That’s right, excess consumption of water before bedtime will only lead to one thing – constant urination. Like the point above, you don’t want to spend precious sleep time scrambling for the bathroom. Nutritionists recommend hydrating more during the day and getting the pee out of the way before actually going to bed.

1. Pounded yam

Ah, good ol’ pounded yam, our dear favourite meal – the perfect meal to treat yourself to after a long day of hard-work and stress. However, due to the fact that it is an energy-giving food, this delicious meal is best taken during the day when your body needs all the energy it requires. Late night consumption of it will leave you feeling heavy and convert all that energy to fat, leaving room for excess weight.

There are a few other things you really shouldn’t eat before going to bed, but I don’t want to scare you completely. After all, something must kill a man, and why not let it be something you really enjoy?
