The defender has attracted a lot of attention following a string of sensational appearances at the back for Croatia at the World Cup.
The 20-year-old is currently preparing to take on Argentina in the semi-finals later this week, where he’ll be looking to help his country reach their second consecutive final.
He has certainly done his part so far. Gvardiol’s defensive displays have seen him receive a lot of praise through the tournament.
Chelsea fans may be cursing their luck that he wasn’t going to this tournament as a Blue.
Todd Boehly reportedly launched a late move to sign the defender during the summer, however his efforts came up short.
Chelsea attempted pre-deal for Gvardiol
Phillips has claimed the club have attempted to strike a deal with Leipzig in a similar way to how the reported signing of Chrstopher Nkunku has been done.
He said: “They tried to get a pre-deal done with Gvardiol, like they have done with Nkunku, but they’ve yet to manage to do that.
“Obviously, other clubs are now circling for him as well. He’s had an unreal World Cup and he’s been a standout defender in the whole competition so far. He’s going to have many more options come up now.”
The Blues reportedly held a secret medical with the Frenchman towards the end of the summer after accepting the realisation that they were not going to be able to sign him before this season.
All the signs currently suggest that Nkunku will join next summer, however currently it is unclear which way Gvardiol will turn.
Reports have claimed that the Blues have submitted their first bid to sign the highly-talented defender, but are facing extreme competition from Europe’s elite sides.
