Platforms 1 and 2 on the Hope Valley line will be increased to allow longer trains to use the station.

The works will begin on Tuesday 4 Jan, and will also strengthen the railway bridge over Stockport Road.

Both the road and the railway will be closed at certain times, meaning services will be affected.

There will be no trains on Saturday 8 January between Sheffield and New Mills Central, or on Sunday 16 and 23 Jan between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield.

There will be a rail replacement bus service for these routes, and it is advised to plan your journey in advance.

Stockport Road will be closed on the affected weekends too.

Signposts marking diversionary routes will be in place from Saturday night to Monday morning every weekend between 8 Jan to 7 Feb.

A part of the station’s car park will be unavailable for use for the entire duration of the work between January and February.

The works will be undertaken by a combination of both day and night shifts.

Network Rail has written to residents and will continue to keep people updated about the project’s progress.

Jim Scholes, project manager for Network Rail, said: “These essential platform extensions will allow for longer trains to stop at Romiley station, while also ensuring the bridge is safe for years to come.

“I appreciate the road closure and diversionary route will cause some inconvenience for passengers, residents and motorists. We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we complete this major upgrade.”

“Some of the car park at Romiley will be out of use as it is needed to allow Network Rail to complete the improvement work.
