The majority of the game was frustrating for Erik ten Hag’s team as they were unable to forge chances or score at Elland Road.
However, the Red Devils stole all three points from Manchester City with two goals in the final 10 minutes, moving them ahead of them into second place.
In light of that, let’s look at what Ten Hag got right and wrong as United’s comeback this season progressed.
1. Lack of creativity
In a disappointing day, United struggled to generate quality chances at Elland Road. The Red Devils failed to have a shot on goal until Bruno Fernandes was stopped by Illan Meslier late in the first half. Chance only came about because of a mistake made by Maximilian Wober.
Due to the Red Devils’ struggles, the defense turned to long balls over the top in an effort to gain the upper hand. unable to take advantage of the hold-up play of Wout Weghorst and the speed of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho on the wings.
2. Defensive changes
Following Wednesday’s home draw with Leeds, Erik ten Hag decided to change his defense, substituting Maguire and Tyrell Malacia for Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
Shaw joined Maguire in the center of defense as a result of the adjustments. The new-look defense, though, found it difficult to contain the Leeds forwards and was constantly under attack from the home team.
Leeds had many opportunities to take the lead during the game, and with better finishing, United could have trailed by several goals before the break.
