1. They compare themselves to everyone all the time.

Constantly scrolling through feeds that make you feel that green-eyed monster come to the surface? Hit the brakes! Comparing your journey to other people’s is a guaranteed way to zap your happiness. Celebrate your wins, both big and small, and focus on your own unique path to fulfillment.

2. They blame everyone else for their problems.

Blaming other people for your problems might feel comforting, but it leaves you feeling powerless. Take ownership of your choices and focus on what you can control. This empowers you to change your situation instead of just complaining about it. You can run your own life, and you should!

3. They are (or hang out with) constant complainers.

Do you have a friend who finds a raincloud in every sunshine? It’s okay to limit your exposure to chronic complainers. Surround yourself with positive, uplifting people who inspire and motivate you. Their good vibes will be contagious! At the very least, you’ll be a little less miserable.

4. They think happiness is something they have to achieve, not something they can have now.

Waiting for “when” to be happy? Spoiler alert: happiness is a present-moment thing. Don’t condition your joy on future achievements because you literally never know what’s right around the corner. You have to live for now. Find gratitude for the good things in your life right now, and watch your happiness blossom.

5. They hold onto grudges.

Holding onto anger and resentment weighs you down like a sack of bricks. Forgive (for your own peace of mind, not necessarily the other person’s) and let go. You’ll free up mental space for joy and move forward feeling lighter. You have to let bygones be bygones for yourself.

6. They spend way too much time on social media.

Feeling overwhelmed by constant updates and unrealistic portrayals on social media? Give yourself a detox! Reconnect with the real world and authentic interactions that nourish your soul. You might be surprised how much better you feel when you step away from your screen and get out in the real world.

7. They “should” all the time.

Do you find yourself saying things like “I should be further along” or “I should have…”? These “shoulds” create guilt and pressure rather than recognizing how far you’ve already come. Replace them with “could” and “will.” Focus on making progress, not achieving perfection, and celebrate every step forward.

9. They don’t know how to say “no.”

People-pleasing might seem selfless, but it drains your energy and breeds resentment. Learn to say “no” gracefully when things don’t align with your values or well-being. It’s okay to put yourself first sometimes! In fact, it’s downright necessary for your own mental and emotional well-being.

11. They dwell on their mistakes.

We all make mistakes, but obsessing over them won’t change the past and only hurts your present. Learn from your mistakes, forgive yourself, and move on. Focus on the present and future possibilities rather than ruminating of what’s now in the past. You have to move on.

12. They’re always chasing perfection.

Striving for perfection is a recipe for unhappiness. It sets unrealistic expectations and leads to constant self-criticism. Embrace your imperfections, quirks, and all! They make you, you. After all, perfect doesn’t actually exist, so you’d only be wasting your time trying for it.

Fear can be paralyzing, preventing you from pursuing your dreams and experiencing new things. While staying cautious is important, don’t let fear dictate your life. Take calculated risks, step outside your comfort zone, and embrace the growth that comes with it.

15. Their self-talk is incredibly negative.

Do you find yourself constantly putting yourself down with negative self-talk? It’s time to silence that inner critic! Treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion you would show a friend. Be your own inner cheerleader and celebrate your strengths.
