Mourinho has recently been dismissed by many as an old fashioned coach but this old fashioned football has proven the best weapon for the teams that made it to the final of the 2022 world cup.

If you look carefully, you’ll realize that teams that played the best versions of football are no longer in the tournament. Take Spain for example who were so entertaining in their first game that they scored 7 times. When they got to the knockout, they lost to Morocco despite keeping the ball for majority of the match and Portugal suffered the same fate.

In England’s quarterfinal loss to France, they were the best team but lost out. Argentina and France have played on the counter attack all tournament and they both find themselves in the final.

Mourinho’s risk aversive style might be obsolete but it happens to be the best bet for international football as we have seen in recent times. Take Portugal at Euro 2016, France at the 2022 World cup and Italy at Euro 2020.
