Asides your comfort as a mother, your sleeping also affects your baby’s health as a wrong one can interfere with adequate blood flow to your baby. According to Healthkine, sleeping on your left side is the ideal position during pregnancy.
It not only allows for optimum blood flow to your baby, but also lifts pressure away from your kidneys and liver, allowing them to function properly.
That said, below are sleeping positions to avoid:
1. Right-sided sleeping: this has been associated with laying pressure on a large vein that carries blood to your heart and, in turn, to your baby.
2. Stomach sleeping: this may be safe in the 16-18 weeks of pregnancy. After then, it becomes totally undesirable due to the expanded breasts and protruded abdomen making it less comfortable
3. Back sleeping: this may be safe in the first trimester. This however should not be an option to consider after then as studies have linked sleeping on the back during pregnancy to stillbirths.
In summary, you may need to talk to your doctor if you feel so concerned about your sleeping position especially if it is interfering with your comfort which in turn can have effect on your baby’s health.
