As the world celebrate the new year, there seems to be a new bond of happiness, celebrations and joy among Nigerians as social media platforms is marred by cheerful and goodwill messages. People have temporarily forgotten about the tension, anxiety and other unfortunate memories of last year. Violent agitators, unknown gunmen and other armed secessionists should embrace the new normal (peace and unity) and abandon their quest for the continuous development of the country. The agitation has brought economic degradation, violence and anxiety to the southeastern region of the country. The illegal sit-at-home order recently imposed by the proscribed Eastern Security Network ESN has affected the stability and economic potentials of the region. Local businesses were largely affected by this menace due to huge financial losses incurred to them during the period. Vehicles conveying goods were set ablaze by hoodlums, destruction of public properties etc.
In this new year, people of the Southeast should focus on rebuilding the region and stabilising the economic growth and development of the people. Those with genuine concerns should forward their complaints or grievances to the National Assembly through their representatives as required by the law.
