When Muhammed Yusuf, the founder and first leader of the aforementioned Insurgent faction died in 2009, Shekau who used to be his assistant replaced him. And he vowed to revenge the death of Yusuf.
In no time, Shekau turned the Boko Haram extremist group into a legion of terrorists that uses bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and suicide bombers to wreck havocs, as well as kill innocent people in their tens of thousands. In addition, he maimed and rendered millions of others homeless. He became so wicked that even some of junior colleagues, including Abu Musab Al Barnawi, who was a son of Yusuf, became uncomfortable with him, and thus, called him to order. However, he tried to kill them as a result. But they managed to escape by the whiskers in 2015.
Al Barnawi and a few others who were lucky to escape from Shekau’s deadly attack later teamed up to continue the existence of the Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) in 2016. And from then onward, the war of supremacy that is still on between the two terrosts groups ((Boko Haram and ISWAP) began.
As a reminder, when Shekau swore allegiance to the Asia-based Islamic State for Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in 2015, the Boko Haram group was changed to ISWAP. But when the leadership of ISIS asked him to step down for Al Barnawi, he refused to do so.
In June of this year, news broke out that a number of 300 ISWAP terrorists who were specially trained by ISIS men in Lybia launched an attack on Shekau and his followers in their hideout in Sambisa forest. And at the end of the deadly clash, the attackers who were led by Al Barnawi triumphed; however, Shekau and his personal guards managed to escap from them. And accordingto reports, they were later caught hiding under a tree. And while they were trying to make him (Shekau) to swear allegiance to ISWAP, he took his own life by detonating the bomb that was strapped to the jacket he was wearing. Since then, the same fiendish terrorist leader who had previously been reappearing after his death was announced for about four times has not been heard of, even up till now.
