You should know that the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint that has three main bones which are cushioned by cartilage. They are known as;

1) Humerus (long arm bone)

2) The clavicle (collarbone)

3) The scapula (also known as the shoulder blade).

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body. It enables the shoulder move forward and backward. It also allows the arm to move in a circular motion and to move up and away from the body.

Most times, certain things can cause pain in the shoulder joint. They include diseases of the cervical spine (neck), as well as liver, heart, gallbladder disease, etc.

CAUSES OF SHOULDER PAIN

According to the publication by Healthline, the following are the causes of pains in the shoulder;

– ROTATOR CUFF TENDINITIS. It is a condition that is caused by swollen tendons.

– Arthritis

– Torn cartilage

– Torn rotator cuff

– Swollen bursa sacs or tendons

– Bone spurs (bony projections that develop along the edges of bones)

– Pinched nerve in the neck or shoulder

– Broken shoulder or arm bone

– Frozen shoulder

– Dislocated shoulder

– Injury due to overuse or repetitive use

– spinal cord injury

– Heart attack

DIAGNOSIS

The Doctor will carry out the following test and imaging to diagnose this condition;

– Physical examination

– X-ray

– MRI

It is advisable to see your Doctor if your shoulder pain is associated with inability to move the shoulder, fever, tenderness, etc.

TREATMENT

The treatment of the pain will depend on the cause and severity of the shoulder pain but will generally include physical or occupational therapy, a sling or shoulder immobilizer or surgery. The Doctor may also recommend medications such as NSAID or Corticosteroids.

Minor pains could be managed with ice, resting the hands or simple exercise.
