The Netherlands produced a clinical attacking performance and survived a brief scare to beat the USA 3-1 and qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

The USA had more possession (59 percent) and shots at goal (17 to the Netherlands’).

With an average age of 24, the USA were one of the youngest teams at this World Cup. Many of the players of their squad are likely to remain in the team during the next World Cup cycle.

Lionel Messi’s first goal in the knockout rounds of the World Cup sent Argentina ahead in the 35th minute before Julian Alvarez doubled the advantage for the South Americans just before the hour.

Australia benefitted from a huge deflection in the 77th minute to halve the deficit, with Craig Goodwin’s strike hitting Enzo Fernandez before dropping into the back of the net, but the Socceroos could not find a second.
