Speaking at the National Women’s Day celebrations in Katakwi district, President Museveni revealed his decision to reject the customary practice of accepting bride price for his daughters.
Instead, he opted to pay dowry to the families of his daughters’ in-laws, marking a symbolic gesture towards social and economic transformation.
Contrary to norms in Ankole culture, where the groom’s family typically offers money or properties to the bride’s family, President Museveni emphasized his commitment to breaking away from this tradition.
Citing the need for Ugandan families to embrace progressive values to combat gender-based violence and promote women’s empowerment, Museveni highlighted the importance of redefining marital customs.
Under President Museveni’s leadership, Ankole has witnessed a shift away from traditional practices, particularly in communities where commercialized cattle keeping has flourished.
Museveni noted the evolving socio-economic landscape, where families in Ankole have distanced themselves from conventional customs of exchanging bride price.
President Museveni recounted a recent wedding attended by one of his ministers, where the bride’s family declined the groom’s gifts and instead requested a dowry in the form of cows.
