Martinez has gone on to become Villa and Argentina’s number one shot stopper after leaving north London.

And the 30-year-old is now enjoying a brilliant World Cup campaign for Lionel Scaloni’s men. Argentina went 2-0 up against the Netherlands yesterday after goals form Nahuel Molina and Lionel Messi.

But they were pegged back by a late Wout Weghorst brace and forced to decide the game on penalties. Martinez proved to be the hero as he denied Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis from the spot and Argentina booked their place in the semi-final.

Now, his former teammate in Aubameyang has praised him for his penalty shootout heroics.

Aubameyang sends message to Martinez

Martinez posted on Instagram last night following Argentina’s dramatic win over Louis van Gaal’s men.

The Villa shot stopper wrote: “With humility, heart, passion and head. We keep dreaming. We keep firm. We are united for a country.”

Aubameyang replied underneath the post and wrote: “I knew it before the penalties,” alongside a laughing emoji and a clapping emoji.

His teammates flocked beneath the post to praise him after his display and Chelsea legend John Terry also replied with a series of emojis.

Martinez has been brilliant for Argentina over the past few years and was key to their Copa America victory in 2021.
