During an interview with Arise TV, Okutepa addressed concerns about the court’s ability to consistently produce high-quality jurisprudence given the immense caseload and the challenge of maintaining a consistent standard across such a wide variety of appeals.

He pointed out that the Nigeria Supreme Court stands out as one of the few Supreme Courts globally that hears appeals on a vast array of issues, even extending to arguments on whether a goat was slaughtered correctly.

He referred to remarks made by Hon. Justice Amina Augie during her retirement, where she highlighted the breadth of cases handled by the court.

Okutepa stated that the court is confronted with an overwhelming volume of appeals originating from all levels of the court of appeal. The sheer number of cases being handled by judges of considerable age raises questions about how they manage the workload.

In his words; “The load of work, the kind of volume of work, from my little knowledge, I think the Nigeria Supreme Court is about the only Supreme Court in the world that hears all manner of appeals, including arguments as to whether or not a goat was properly slaughtered or not.
