Most of these parents have blamed apartment owners for stretching deeper into the current boreholes to get water to service the increased building coming up within the estates.

According to Citizen Digital, apartment blocks going higher and higher in these posh areas has resulted in a strain on scarce resources that were not meant to cater for so many buildings.

A resident of Nairobi’s Lavington area, William Sirengo, narrated the challenges he’s faced ever since he moved into the neighbourhood.

Sirengo added that parents in the estate started to notice a trend among their children whereby their teeth started browning and blamed it on the borehole water.

According to Gerties.org, fluorosis is the accumulation of excess fluoride in the bones and teeth. It causes permanent discolouration of teeth and when severe, can even cause a change in the tooth structure.

The teeth can either be chalky white, light brown or dark brown, sometimes appearing as pits or grooves on the teeth.

According to a report by Daily Nation, Nairobi’s borehole water contains high concentrations of fluoride, which may discolour one’s teeth.

Nearly nearly 20 million Kenyans ingest toxic levels of the mineral and suffer the effects of high fluoride concentrations in their groundwater.

Now, residents in these posh areas have been forced to invest in installing water filtration systems, while the estate has brought together funds in a bid to buy a central water filtration system which they can buy water from for use when cooking and for brushing teeth.

Elsewhere, Caroline Mutoko, in 2022, urged people living near clubs making noise in their hoods to go to court and defend their neighbourhood from pollution.

She said her neighbours were the ones setting up noisy clubs in other places before retreating to quiet hoods where even dogs cannot bark loudly.
