However, the club has made major headways in the area of departures as the likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, and Edinson Cavani are expected to officially leave the club after the end of their contracts at the end of this month.

Nemanja Matic has secured a move to AS Roma and the likes of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, and Axel Tuanzebe are the centre-backs who are expected to be sold this summer.

The players Manchester United is most linked with are Antony of Ajax, Cristian Eriksen, who is a free agent after his six-month deal with Brentford ended, and Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie De Jong. Peradventure they get the deal for all three players done, below is how they would lineup in Erik ten Hag’s preferred 4-3-3 formation:

Goalkeeper: David De Gea

David De Gea’s ability to adapt to Erik ten Hag’s style of play has been questioned for most of the summer transfer window but his performance for Manchester United last season is enough to help him stay at Old Trafford for another season.

Right-back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Last season, Aaron Wan-Bissaka lost his place in the team to the more attack-minded Diogo Dalot but he could be given the chance to fight for a place in the team if Manchester United is unable to sign a right-back this summer.

With Erik ten Hag’s hands-on approach, Aaron Wan-Bissaka could improve his attacking play and easily recover his place on the team

Centre-back: Raphaël Varane

Raphaël Varane didn’t have the best of campaigns last season as the whole team struggled. However, he is expected to be a core part of the team as Erik ten Hag plots Manchester United’s return to the summit of English football.

Centre-back: Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire is coming on the back of what was probably the worst season of his professional career. But Erik ten Hag is likely to want to make use of the Englishman’s passing abilities. If Manchester United signs Jurrien Timber from Ajax, he could provide some serious competition for Maguire for a starting spot.

Left-back: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw was one of Manchester United’s best players in the 2020/21 season but last season, he was plagued with injuries and COVID-19. This saw him surrender his place in the team to Alex Telles.

Defensive Midfielder: Frenkie De Jong

Barcelona is under pressure to sell some of their key players due to their current financial problems and Frenkie De Jong is one of the stars available for sale.

The Dutchman is open to reuniting with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United but the English club has been unable to agree on a deal with his club due to the €85 million fee placed on him.

Centre Midfielder: Bruno Fernandes

Centre Midfielder: Cristian Eriksen

Manchester United has offered Cristian Eriksen a contract according to reports and they are waiting for the former Tottenham Hotspur star’s reply.

The second half of last season saw Eriksen sign for Brentford and he was easily the best player on the team as he helped the club finish 13th on the log.

Since making his Premier League debut for Brentford on February 26, Eriksen created 30 chances in the English top flight. That’s the third-most in the league and only Kevin De Bruyne (42) and Martin Odegaard (38) created more during that time.

Sancho is expected to play a significant role in Erik ten Hag’s team next season.

Centre-forward: Cristiano Ronaldo

37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year at Manchester United this past season. He scored 24 goals and provided three assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. Ronaldo has proven that he still has what it takes to deliver at the highest level.
