In this article, I will be sharing with you some signs that show your body may be low in magnesium and what to do. According to MedicalNewsToday, magnesium deficiency can include drowsiness, loss of appetite, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, nausea and vomiting, and weakness.

Magnesium is a vital mineral and electrolyte that plays a role in many bodily processes like muscle function, nerve function, DNA replication, energy production, bone and teeth formation. It is indeed important that people are getting enough magnesium in their diet each day to stay healthy.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), found that the majority of people were not getting enough magnesium in their diet. However, certain factors can increase a person’s risk of developing magnesium deficiency symptoms. Some of the factors may include;

Pregnancy, regular consumption of a low-magnesium diet, losing excessive amounts of magnesium through urine and sweat resulting from genetic disorders or drinking too much alcohol, type 2 diabetes, old age taking certain medications, such as proton pump inhibitors, diuretics, bisphosphonates, and antibiotics.

Below are some signs that indicate the body is low in magnesium.

Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness. Sadly, as it progresses, people affected will experience; lower calcium levels in the blood, known as hyponatremia, lower potassium levels in the blood called hypokalemia, numbness and tingling, cramps and muscle contractions, seizures and abnormal heart rhythms.

However, to reach the required daily amount for magnesium there is food to eat that contain high levels of magnesium, such as green vegetables, fruit, whole grains, cereals, and legumes. Below are some foods high in magnesium.

Nuts, especially almonds, cashews, peanuts, spinach, black beans, peanut butter, whole wheat bread, oatmeal, kidney beans, banana and apples, salmon, milk, raisins, chicken breast, broccoli and carrot.

1. Reduce or avoid calcium-rich foods two hours before or after eating magnesium-rich foods.

4. Quit smoking

In summary, exceeding the recommended dose of magnesium can cause diarrhoea, cramping, and nausea. While infants, older adults, and people with reduced renal function are at increased risk of magnesium toxicity and should avoid high-dose supplements.
