Benfica announced the sale on Monday. The Portuguese club will receive an initial €75 million from Liverpool this summer, and then a potential €25 million in add-ons. This could bring the transfer fee up to €100 million.

If that’s the case, it would smash the €84.65 million club-record fee that Liverpool forked out to sign Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018.

Jurgen Klopp’s side previously signed Fabio Carvalho from Fulham in a €5.9 million deal. They may pay a further €3.2 million in add-ons. The deal includes a 20% sell-on clause.

Mohamed Salah has also confirmed he plans to stay at Anfield for at least one more season, while James Milner has signed a one-year contract extension.

Seven players, including striker Divock Origi and goalkeeper Loris Karius, will leave the club as free agents at the end of their contracts this summer.
