De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij is the source of the report, linking Jürgen Klopp’s struggling Reds to a potential move for the 22-year-old Accra native who has leaped onto the scene this winter in Qatar under head coach Otto Addo, bagging a match-winning brace for the Black Stars in a heroic 3-2 win over South Korea at Education City Stadium earlier today.
Kudus now sits on seven goals in twenty caps for Ghana and his form for his country this winter comes off the back of further breakout performances at club level for Dutch giants AFC Ajax this season in the Eredivisie, with the former Right to Dream Academy product and FC Nordsjælland youngster sitting on ten goals across 21 appearances in all competitions in 2022-23 for Alfred Schreuder’s de Godenzonen.
Liverpool is set to lose multiple midfield assets at the end of the season, with James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both set to leave on free transfers, while Malian international Naby Keïta could also be out the door after the former RB Leipzig standout has yet to truly hit the ground running on Merseyside.
That leaves Liverpool with just Thiago, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and Curtis Jones as central options in midfield, exposing the Reds’ real lack of ball progression, creativity, and supportive goal-scoring from the center of the park.
Kudus’ tactically versatile profile has seen him operate primarily as a mobile 8 and in an attacking 10 role since his arrival in Denmark back in 2018 before becoming one of the most highly-touted young players in the Superligaen while at Right to Dream Park.
It is expected that Liverpool will face stiff competition for Kudus’ services, however, with Premier League outfit Wolves having previously been linked with interest in the midfielder as well as Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund on the back of Ghana manager Atto Oddo’s direct connection to the Ruhr valley as the club’s current talent-ID coach.
Purchased by Ajax for €9m, the iconic Dutch club is sure to extract maximum financial restitution should Kudus seek a move away from Johan Cruijff Arena given their hard stance on rarely – if ever – parting with young talent unless their demands are met.
