Media Digest: Liverpool reportedly considered hijacking a £51m transfer move this week while a Real Madrid star has rather strangely been linked with a move.

Welcome to the Liverpool.com daily Media Digest. From transfers to tweets, it can be hard to keep up with everything going on in the Anfield sphere. Credible, incredible and anything in between: we round it all up in one place here, taking a sideways look at the day’s media goings-on from around the world.

£40m player tipped for transfer

Liverpool have been told to make a move for Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton by former player Didi Hamann, with the ex-Germany international claiming he would be perfect for Jürgen Klopp’s side.

“They haven’t got goals from midfield and I think that’s their Achilles heel,” Hamann told GGRecon. “I watched Newcastle United versus Manchester City last week and looking at that I think they need a midfielder with presence.

“You look at Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Thiago. They’re all similar, tidy players. I think they could do with someone like Joelinton from Newcastle: I think he’s someone who’s technically gifted, who’s a big lad and has a great strike on him.

“I think that’s the type of player they miss. Whether you can get him now with a few days of the transfer window left to go, I’m not too sure. If there’s one area where they could do with a player, it’s in midfield.”

Newcastle paid £40m for Joelinton in 2019 and used him as a number nine before Eddie Howe stumbled across using him as a number eight, where he suddenly looked like a Premier League player.

Real Madrid man linked

A bizarre report in Spain has put forward a new name as Liverpool search for a midfield addition: Real Madrid veteran Toni Kroos. According to Fichajes, the 32-year-old is an option for the Reds with their injuries in that area of the pitch.

Curtis Jones is back in training now, however, and Thiago is getting closer to a return. Liverpool are still looking out for the right player to add to their squad, but will not be moving for anyone for the sake of it.

Kroos has had an excellent career but at his age, Liverpool are not going to be moving for him. Until the 11pm deadline on Thursday, though, the rumours will continue.

Liverpool transfer hijack

Liverpool reportedly considered hijacking the signing of Lucas Paquetá before the Brazilian international moved to West Ham United earlier in the week, with it being claimed that the Reds were interested in the former Lyon man.

“The one we heard regarding Liverpool, and he’s gone to West Ham now, is Lucas Paquetá,” journalist Adam Crafton said on The Athletic Football Podcast. “There was a little bit of interest from Liverpool but they didn’t seem to act on it particularly strongly when it came to it last week.”

Paquetá would have been a good addition for Liverpool in the sense that he can play in midfield and attack — two areas that the Reds could do with more depth in — but he cost West Ham a fee of €60m (£51m) in the end, which may well have been more than most were prepared to pay.

“It is unfortunate that Lucas Paquetá is leaving but he wanted to leave,” Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas told Canal+ (via the Daily Mail) on Monday evening. “We thought we’d have very big clubs come in, but we didn’t have them. We were then forced to speak at the last minute with West Ham.”
