Those with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing kidney disease. Those with kidney disease find it difficult to regulate blood potassium content and, as a result, hyperkalamia (high potassium in the blood).
According to healthline, avoid or limit your intake of these foods if you’re diabetic or have kidney disease.
Potatoes and sweet potatoes
Potatoes and sweet potatoes are high in potassium and sugar, and as such, diabetic patients and those with kidney disease should limit their intake. However, the sugar and potassium content can be reduced by soaking or boiling.
Beans and lentils
Beans and lentils contain a high amount of phosphorus, and as such, they’re not healthy for diabetic patients and people with kidney disease.
Potassium-rich fruits
Fruits high in potassium include bananas, avocados, apricots, kiwi, and oranges. They can increase the amount of potassium in the blood and, as such, diabetic patients and people with kidney disease should limit their intake.
Processed meat
Processed meats and high sodium foods are not ideal for people with kidney disease and diabetes because excess sodium can significantly strain the kidneys.
Leafy green vegetables
Various leafy green veggies, such as spinach, beet greens, and chard, contain high amounts of nutrients like potassium and oxalic acid. Oxalic acid can increase your risk of developing kidney stones.
