A formal offer was reportedly submitted by United earlier this week, but it seems as though the 13-time Premier League champions will now be forced to look elsewhere in their efforts to find cover for David de Gea between now and the end of the summer window.
Trapp has confirmed via a statement on Instagram that United registered their interest in his services before insisting that he will be going nowhere after informing the Red Devils that he would prefer to stay at Frankfurt for the foreseeable future.
“Dear fans, there have been a lot of reports of interest in Manchester United in the past few days,” began Trapp.
“It is true that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a world club and the fact that I can deal with and think about such an offer, I hope everyone understands.
“Yesterday, however, I informed the person in charge of both clubs that I had chosen Eintracht. I have experienced unforgettable things here with Frankfurt and we made history together. The start to the season has been bumpy, but I have absolute faith in us.”
United’s need for a competent backup goalkeeper has been amplified in recent weeks amid De Gea’s shaky start to the new Premier League campaign.
The Spaniard has conceded seven goals in just three matches and has been criticised over his ability to play out from the back under Erik ten Hag’s new system at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are reportedly keen on bringing in a new option who is more adept with the ball at his feet than De Gea, who has served as United’s first-choice stopper since displacing Henderson during the latter stages of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time in charge.
Jamie Carragher recently suggested that De Gea is not good enough in possession to play under Ten Hag after United’s opening-day loss at the hands of Brighton, during which he failed to impress with his distribution and decision-making when passing to his team-mates.
