KPLC noted that the process will take place in the next three years and aims at reducing power theft and meter reading costs.

How to apply for KPLC token meters, costs

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the electricity distributor explained that the process is seamless and only requires customers to make application.

However, before applying for the token meters, customers need to have cleared balances on the postpaid meters.

“The customer should apply for the token meter… the forms are available at the banking halls. All debt must be cleared from the postpaid meter before migrating to the smart meter system. The new meter costs KSh 7,500,” said KPLC.

Is the token system cheaper?

KPLC demystified the cost of the postpaid system compared to the prepaid system.

The utility firm averred that the cost of a unit token is equal to the price of a meter unit.

“Some people believe the old meter system has higher rates per unit than the token. No. The cost is the same, whether prepaid or postpaid,” the company assured.

What to do in case your token meter is stolen

Kenya Power advised extra caution to customers already using token meters, urging them to report any incident of theft to the relevant authority.

“For a stolen meter, report to the nearest police station and bring the abstract to Kenya Power banking halls. Once investigations are concluded, a new meter will be assigned,” said KPLC.

In the fiscal year ending June 2023, KPLC reported a KSh 3.2 billion net loss attributed to electricity theft and meter reading costs.

How many KPLC customers will connect to token system

During the year ending December 2023, the utility firm increased its customer base by 13.87% to 9,454,819 users.

KPLC managing director Joseph Siror attributed the growth in customers to the availability of smart meters, which the company is now using to connect new customers.
