The coalition of civil society organisations from northern Nigeria has indicated interest to seek an audience with the president over the issue of Nnamdi Kanu. The northern part of the country plays important role in the political dynamics of the country. Only the federal government can decide to consider amnesty or pardon to people arrested for various offences. The case of IPOB has become a national issue that is worthy of more consultations, deliberations and engagements with tribal and political leaders from the various regions of the country. The aim of the northern coalition is to influence and advice the government. Recently, the group has urged the current administration to grant any region the opportunity to secede if it will guarantee peace and stability.

The case of Mr Nnamdi Kanu which is already before the Abuja federal high court is generating more attention from various segments of the country. Many political commentators, analysts and other prominent personalities especially from the southern part of the country have urged the federal government to consider negotiation with the leader of the proscribed organisation known as Independent People of Biafra (IPOB). President Muhammadu Buhari has only offered to consider this request as suggested by Igbo leaders.

The National Assembly is the only avenue recognised by law to influence, decide and deliberate on sensitive national issues such as secession, restructuring of the country’s political system, state police etc. This is why each state has representatives in the legislative institution. People are expected to directly engage with the government through their representatives. Democracy has given people the opportunity to forward their grievances, complaints and suggestions to the National Assembly for further deliberations.
