The police officer investigating the matter, however, described Jowie in a manner that the court agreed with based on other witness statements.

The High Court has sentenced Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie, to death after convicting him of the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

The case that has been in court for about six years ended on Wednesday, March 13, when Justice Grace Nzioka sentenced Jowie, the main suspect, to death, describing the decision as the most appropriate and proportionate.

Before reading the sentence that left Kenyans sympathising with Jowie and others, terming it fit for his deeds, Justice Nzioka went through the mitigation report by the accused, submissions by the victim’s family, and the presentencing report.

Despite his neighbours and area administration officers describing him as a well-mannered, social, and law-abiding citizen, the investigating officer had a contrary opinion that was cited in granting the accused the maximum sentence for the offence.

Free Area Senior Chief Samuel Macharia said Jowie had never threatened the community. Jowie’s local pastor at Agape Church echoed the administrator’s sentiments, saying the convict was steadfast in faith.

Pastor Shadrack Oloo, in the probation report, indicated that Jowie actively served in church wherever he was at home.

However, Investigating Officer Maxwell Otieno shared a different side of Jowie and pleaded with the court to give him a maximum sentence for the offence.

The officer’s recommendations were akin to the probation officer’s, who said Jowie was unstable in relating to people and used anger to get others to do what he wanted.

According to the recommendations of the report, Joiwe had a double personality. The court agreed with the reports, citing incidents when he wielded a gun when security officers at the place he resided asked to search him as was required.
