He has also thrived in these murky waters of mediation and peace. Though he served in the military for 36 years, Lieutenant General ( Rtd) Lazarus Sumbeiywo is best known for his role in the South Sudan peace process.
Lt General ( Rtd) was in 2000 appointed as the Kenya Army Commander by the then President Daniel Arap Moi. But three years later, in 2003, he was fired from his position by the incoming President Mwai Kibaki.
This marked the end of his 36 years in the Kenya Defence Forces as he was retired. His crime? Being very close to the former President Moi.
At the Kenya Army, Lt General Sumbeiywo was succeeded by General Jeremiah Kianga who would go on to become Chief of Defence Forces.
But for Lt General Sumbeiywo, his role as a chief mediator in the South Sudan peace process led to the birth of the new nation in 2011 as South Sudan declared independence from Sudan.This ended decades of conflict in the once largest country in Africa.
And now, 21 years after his unceremonious exit from KDF, the former Kenya Army chief is back to the familiar territory where he made a name for himself as a top mediator and peace ambassador.
