Winnie Auma, 30, was hacked with a panga on Wednesday morning in Mwirendia village, Kaksingri West location, before the suspect surrendered to the police.
The two separated three years ago over domestic wrangles. Auma remarried just some 15 km from the previous home.
Area police commander Caxton Ndunda said she took two children to her new home and left the suspect with three children.
“The murder incident occurred during a fight when Auma went back to pick the other three children from her ex-husband,” he said.
Auma sustained injuries on the head and her two hands were chopped off. She died on the spot. After committing the heinous act, the suspect walked to Gingo Police Post with his panga and told the police that he had committed murder.
Ndunda said the suspect was arrested and detained at the police post, before being transferred to Magunga station for further interrogation.
Residents who witnessed the incident said the two had a protracted wrangle over the children. Police said they have reports that the suspect once sent away a children’s officer from Suba subcounty, whose help had been sought by Auma.
Auma wanted the officer to help her secure the custody of her remaining three children.Ndunda urged couples to seek guidance and counseling over domestic issues.
“Couple should seek appropriate ways of addressing their differences. They should embrace guidance and counseling from religious leaders, elders and other people to prevent such heinous acts,” he said.
