It was indeed an unfortunate incident in Kano State on Tuesday when a Bagwai boat transporting 50 passengers reportedly drowned in the middle of the river. The people of the state were left in panic and sorrow after reports revealed that the boat ferrying 50 people had drowned and about 20 out of the 50 passengers on board were rumoured to be dead, while the other passengers who were rescued are currently in the hospital receiving emergency treatments. Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Abbar Anwar, was quick to react to the death of the passengers while also expressing his shock.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, through his Chief Press Secretary on Wednesday, urged the drivers to always put everything in place before putting their boat on the river, and he also urged them to realise that life is too important to be risked. This statement by the governor shows that he values the lives of his citizens, something that Nigerians have always accused our leaders of lacking in the past.
His statement also means that he may have stylishly warned the drivers not to put outdated or low-quality boats on the water for travel. The governor is known for his seriousness in handling cases of this nature, and he might take swift action against the drivers if this persists. The governor really deserves some praise for hitting the nail on the head, and he showed great leadership qualities by sending his condolences to the family of the victims.
If our leaders can learn from what Governor Abdullahi Ganduje did, Nigerians will stop insulting them on social media and even in real life. While it may be impossible to stop things like this from happening, it is also important to take safety measures to reduce the damage that may likely come out of it.
