Bob Tracey from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, discovered a black bag stuffed with $100 and $20 bills in March 2016.

Rather than pocket the money which totaled over $15,000 the 61-year-old immediately made a decision that eventually paid off.

The SEPTA worker called the police and handed over the cash to the Upper Darby Police.

This action saw Tracey praised as “truly a good Samarian to turn that kind of cash in,” Superintendent Michael Chitwood told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“When I saw all the money, I also thought it might have been a nighttime drop for a business,” Tracey explained.

“So I had to turn it in, it’s just the way I am,” “We deal with dirt bags day in and day out,” Chitwood added.

“We lock people up every day for stealing and robbing and pillaging, and here’s a gentlemen who comes in, who finds 15-grand and turns it right over.”

Tracey told the news outlet that his wife reassured him that he had made the right decision despite being $15,000 richer “for about a half hour.”

However, Tracey’s good deed paid off in a major way exactly one year later.

The good Samaritan was allowed to keep the cash he found thanks to a little-known law.

Few people know that if you find money in a public place, depending on the amount, it should be handed to the police.

However, this does not necessarily mean that the saying “finders keepers” is untrue.

While state and local laws may vary, typically those who find cash and hand it in can claim it as their own after a period of time if no one else comes forward.

However, finders have a duty to make a substantial effort to return the lost property to its rightful owner.

Failing to do so could lead to a larceny charge and depending on the amount of cash, finders could face a felony rather than a misdemeanor.

Michelle Fazio was putting her 4-year-old into a shopping cart at a Walmart in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when she saw the bag.

The mom decided to search the bag to try and find the owner but instead, she found the cash, bank cards, and PINs.

Fazio also found an attorney’s card so she found his number and called him to track down the owner.

It was discovered that the money belonged to an elderly woman who had gone to Walmart earlier with her caregiver and left the money behind.

Fazio and the attorney managed to return the money to the caregiver and they gave her son a $15 gift card for their efforts to return the money…CONTINUE READING>>
