What is appendicitis and what are its main causes?

For those who do not know, appendicitis is a problem that is directly related to the health of the digestive system. Therefore, our food ends up influencing a lot in this aspect.

How this type of inflammation occurs: The appendix is a small extension organ of the large intestine that serves as a deposit for bacteria.

Its function is to help in the digestion of the food we eat and which makes its way through the digestive system, from the mouth to the anus.

When the appendix becomes inflamed, it can cause acute abdominal pain and fill with pus. The disease, in general, causes a strong pain on the right side of the abdomen, usually around the navel.

Appendicitis has several causes, the most common one being the entry of some faeces inside the appendix, causing irritation and inflammation of the organ.

A gastrointestinal infection that causes invading bacteria to enter the appendix can also cause appendicitis.

What are the main foods that cause appendicitis?

There are some types of food that, when consumed excessively, may trigger inflammations and other problems in the digestive system. Nutritionists highlights some foods, in particular, that favor appendicitis and must be avoided.

Appendicitis is caused by several factors, which include constipation (constipation), overeating, poor diet and foods low in fibre, such as: ultra-processed, fast foods, excess pasta, sweets and fatty red meats.

The constant fermentation and digestion of these foods can result in appendicitis.

Have a healthy diet to prevent appendicitis

In addition to avoiding certain foods, it is important to invest in others that improve the functioning of the digestive system and prevent, in a way, problems in the intestine or appendix.

A diet rich in fibre, with fruit and vegetables (for twice a day), can decrease the intestinal transit time of stools, reducing the risk of them parking in the appendix. Good body hydration also contributes to intestinal health.

In case there is a diagnosis of appendicitis, a surgery must be performed in order to avoid further complications. From then on, during the post-operative process, the care with the food must be maintained or even doubled.
