Southampton had a solid start, pushing Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker to make an early save before defeating him in the 13th minute.
Nathan Redmond put the Saints ahead with a scorching move along the left wing before cutting in unopposed and curling his shot into the top corner, courtesy to a little deflection from James Milner.
After then, Liverpool took control of the game, pressing Southampton back before leveling the score in the 27th minute. Joe Gomez led Liverpool forward before releasing Diogo Jota, who set up Takumi Minamino for a spectacular finish from a tight angle.
Liverpool had a number of chances to grab the lead, with Roberto Firmino, Jota, and Harvey Elliott all coming close. Midway through the second half, the Reds took the lead when Joel Matip instinctively nodded in Kostas Tsimikas’ deflected corner, his header looping over Alex McCarthy’s outstretched arms.
Southampton had one final chance to draw level, but Liverpool hung on to take all three points and keep the Premier League title chase alive until the final day.
After Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with West Ham United, the margin between them and the Reds has shrunk to one point.
