The most impressive moment of Messi’s performance was his pass to set up Argentina’s opener in the first half and Van Dijk was one of the victims of that moment. The entire Netherlands defense was caught out by Messi’s pass and Van Dijk could not help but watch as Molina stroke the ball into the net.

Messi did not stop there as he tormented the Netherland defense throughout the game. The Liverpool defender had to resort to physicality to try and keep Messi quiet but it did not work.

Given that he is seen as one of the best defenders in the world, a lot of fans kept wondering how he cannot deal with a 35 year old Lionel Messi.

There is a lot of truth in that criticism because he has sometimes been considered one of the best defenders in the history of the premier league and he has to leave up to that.

When you are playing against Messi, you have to do more or you get punished for it. Van Dijk and the Netherlands found out the hard way.
