Centre-backs have become more important in football in the last decade. They are no longer in high demand because of their goal-prevention abilities alone. Most of the top-class centre-backs in football right now are centre-backs who are comfortable with the ball at their feet. Those kinds of centre-backs are mostly called ball-playing centre-backs.
This revolution has also added to the value of centre-backs in the transfer market as we have seen in the last few windows. Harry Maguire, who is a decent ball-playing centre-back was signed by Manchester United from Leicester City for £78.3 million. This made him the most expensive centre-back in football’s history.
Some centre-backs also moved as a result of big money deals in the just concluded transfer window. Mathijs De Ligt was sold to Bayern Munich from Juventus for £60.3 million while Lisandro Martinez was signed by Manchester United from Ajax for £51.6 million.
Chelsea was able to complete the signing of long-term target, Wesley Fofana from Leicester City after forking out £74.3 million for him. The former Leicester City centre-back is currently the fourth most expensive centre-back in football’s history.
