Indeed, the Spaniard’s reported £375,000-a-week wage would make him the highest earner at the club, as the Premier League giants aim to reduce their hefty wage bill.
Erik ten Hag has reportedly introduced a salary cap preventing players from earning over £200,000, following claims of ‘dressing room jealousy’ surrounding player’s vastly differing pay cheques.
However, Football Insider report that De Gea has turned his nose up at United’s most recent contract offer, after snubbing United’s initial proposal earlier this month.
In the event that United are unable to reach an agreement with De Gea, Ten Hag has allegedly identified his replacement.
According to Team Talk, Valencia shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili is on the club’s radar, after a breakthrough season in La Liga.
The 22-year-old has been the Spanish side’s saving grace, keeping them in the fight for safety amid relegation fears.
But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Mamardashvili is expected to leave Valencia at the end of the season, despite signing a recent contract extension.
Chelsea are also believed to be ‘monitoring’ the progress of Giorgi Mamardashvili, according to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.
Additionally, he also states that the Georgian shot-stopper is set to leave his current club, Valencia, in the summer.
The Blues are not the only ones who are thought to be interested in signing Mamardashvili – Tottenham Hotspur are also looking closely at him, while Leicester City are believed to have met with the player’s agent over the past couple of weeks.
On top of this, Manchester United are also rumoured to be looking at him.
In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: “Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, expected to leave Valencia in any case at the end of the season despite contract extension signed few months ago.
“Told Chelsea and Tottenham are just monitoring his development; Leicester met with his agent 10 days ago.”
Chelsea are not necessarily in need of a new ‘keeper, but backup in that position could be useful.
Kepa Arrizabalaga is always prone to a mistake, while Edouard Mendy has spent a significant amount of time injured during the current season.
Tottenham and Chelsea are also thought to be keeping tabs on the 6ft 5 Georgia international, while Leicester are said to have met with his agent.
