Villa’s center defender Konsa tried to cushion a header back to his goalkeeper as soon as the ball was played into the area, but he overreached on the backpass, causing it to loop over Martinez, hit the crossbar, and then rebound off the Argentine stopper and into the net.

John McGinn, Moussa Diaby, and an own goal from Luton captain Tom Lockyer had already put Aston Villa into a commanding position.

Emiliano Martinez’s error allowed Luton Town to score in the meantime. A cross entered from the right, and Elijah Adebayo, Konsa’s replacement, engaged in combat.
